Do you have ceiling tiles that look like this in your office, leased property, or place you frequent?
Do the walls and ceiling in your commercial building, office, business, leased property, or warehouse have visible mold and mildew?
Does your roof have smoke and fire damage in your office or commercial property you lease or own?
After years of professional roofing experience we at RoofCore have seen a lot in the roofing business so in this article we would like to share a few things for you to look for as a business owner, property owner, or a real estate agent.
One of the most over looked parts of any storm damage or wind damage to your roof is perforations to your membrane, punctures to your structure or guttering, or movement of your roofing material due to shrinkage can cause water damage leading to the hidden danger of mold and mildew.
Mold needs moisture in order to grow and thrive. Many mold problems originate as a result of some kind of water intrusion, such as roof leaks and/or blocked gutters. Gutters that are blocked can cause water to seep into walls, through the roof, and can cause water to collect at the base of the foundation, which will result in further water damage in a building.
Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees; indoors, mold growth should be avoided. Molds reproduce by means of tiny spores. The spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through the air. Mold may begin growing indoors when spores land on moist surfaces. There are many types of mold, but all require moisture for growth.
Mold exposure has a variety of health effects, and sensitivity to mold varies. Exposure to mold may cause throat irritation, nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, cough and wheezing and skin irritation in some cases. Exposure to mold may heighten sensitivity, depending on the time and nature of exposure. People with chronic lung diseases are at higher risk for mold allergies, and will experience more severe reactions when exposed to mold. Damp indoor environments correlate with upper-respiratory-tract symptoms, such as coughing and wheezing in people with asthma.
Problems associated with molds
INCREASED RISK OF ALLERGIES
High levels of mold, can cause people working in your building to suffer from allergic reactions to the mold. The most common symptoms of an allergic response to increased levels of mold range from runny noses, itchy-watery eyes, coughing, sneezing, and throat irritation to more severe symptoms caused by chronic conditions such as sinusitis and asthma.
Symptoms of mold exposure may include:
- Nasal and sinus congestion; runny nose
- Eye irritation; itchy, red, watery eyes
- Respiratory problems, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing, chest tightness
- Cough
- Throat irritation
- Skin irritation, such as a rash
- Headache
- Persistent sneezing
According to a Mayo Clinic Study, nearly all chronic sinus infections (affecting nearly 37 million Americans) are a result of molds.
LESS PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK
Fungi produce volatile organic compounds during the process of degrading substances to obtain nutrition. Exposure to high levels of VOCs may irritate the mucous membranes and the central nervous system leading to symptoms of headaches, decreased attention span, difficulty in concentration, and dizziness. The mold also produces a musty odor that will certainly decrease employee morale.
Mold in your office building
Mold can cause a wide array of adverse responses in humans depending on the type and quantity that is present.
RoofCore preventive maintenance ensure that:
